Biography and Information:
Gabrielle Chou was born (in Auguest 1995) and grew up in South Florida. None of her
parents are musicians, but they both love classical music, so Gabrielle has been listening to
classical music before she was born. She began violin at age 4, piano at 5, and composition
officially at 9. She is currently a violin student of Carol and David Cole (at Cooper City), a
piano student of Maria Gomez (at Plantation) and music composition student of Donald
Waxman (at Boca Raton).
She was home-schooled for several years, but not anymore. In Fall 2008, she went to public
school at the Silver Trail Middle School and she will go to the West Broward High School in
Fall 2009. So far, she enjoys her school life very much, but sometime struggles to find
enough time of all of her music practice and composition.

In the summer of 2006, 10-year-old Gabrielle had her first international competitions – not
only for violin, but also for piano. She first got the 4th place in the "XIII Andrea Postacchini
International Violin Competition" in Italy, May 22-27. A few weeks later, as one of the only
two Americans admitted to the competition, she received a top award with cash prize in the
"10th Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists" in Germany, August 6-13.
This is one of the most important contests of this type worldwide and this is only the second

About the FFMC state competition:
It's the FFMC (Florida Federation of Music Clubs) junior convention, but most people just
call it "the state competition". It happens once a year and usually on the first Friday and
Saturday of May. For the last four or five years, it is held in the University of North Florida,
Jacksonville. There are 1,300-1,600 students from all over the state come to compete every
year, it's a pretty big event.
At the end of each day, all participants enjoy a concert performed by the winners from last
year, then wait for the result announced in the award ceremony right after.

In the summer of 2004 and 2005, Gabrielle was accepted as one of the youngest violinists to
attend the Summer String Academy at Indiana University. It offers serious young string
players (mostly from 12-18 of age) an intensive and varied program at one of the world's
most renowned schools of music. We recommend this camp for all the serious music students
