| Welcome to the website of 16-year-old violinist, pianist, and composer Gabrielle Chou. Gabrielle was accepted to the Juilliard and Colburn Schools (pre-college), and she decided to continue her music study at the Colburn Academy starting fall of 2011. She was a concertmaster of the Florida Youth Orchestra between 2005-2011, and was a piano and violin soloists with Coral Gables Chamber Symphony, Boynton Regional Symphony Orchestra, Alhambra Orchestra, Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau, and National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Since 2000, she has been the first place winner of more than 40 Florida state competitions in violin, piano and composition including winning of both senior violin concerto and senior piano concerto competition at age 12. In 2009 and 2010, she won the All Performance Awards. As a young composer, Gabrielle has been an American regional and divisional winner and therefore a national finalist four times. She received her first national award in 2009. She is "among the nation's finest young composers" according to the Executive Director of the Music Teachers National Association. In 2009, she also became a winner in YCC competition. Gabrielle had her first international competition on both violin and piano in 2006. She was a prize winner at the 10th Ettlingen International Piano Competition in Germany. In September 2008, she competed in Asia for the first time in the 12th Taipei International Chopin Piano Competition with another 137 contestants. After two weeks of elimination, she was selected as one of the eight finalists. She had a great time performing Chopin Concerto No. 2 with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra at the National Concert Hall. In 2009, she was a prize winner in the 2nd Manchester International Piano Concerto Competition, Manchester, England. In 2011, she first received a Bronze medal in the 5th Bösendorfer and Schimmel USASU International Piano Competition. A few days later, she won another prize in the 2011 Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition. She has played for Lang Lang, Murray Perahia, Susan Starr, Elmar Oliviera, Robert McDonald, Yoheved (Veda) Kaplinsky, Shirley Givens, Arnold Steinhardt and many other prominent musicians. In the summer of 2010, Gabrielle attended the Aspen Music Festival and School where she enjoyed the weekly lesson with great pianist and teacher John O'conor. She also studied violin with Paul Kantor and Cornelia Heard. In the summer of 2011, Gabrielle received TWO years of orchestra fellowship to continue her study at Aspen Music Festeival and School. She studied with the master violin teacher Robert Lipsett (of the Colburn School) and have a chance to study with John O'Conor again. What a joy! |
